I am a book lover, but more than that, I am a lover of words and how powerful they can be. I love how certain authors can string together a series of letters, building into syllables, building into words that can suck your breath away with the sheer beauty of their writing… that can make you laugh or cry or take you back to something in your own past, good or bad. That make you feel.
I have always been a collector of quotes, or short little snippets of things that say something to me, clear back to when I was in grade school. For my dad’s birthday the year I was 12, I spent hours and hours going through books, magazines, and reading poems to give him a hand-written “book of inspiration” to bring him a place to find peace that never seemed to be there (turns out he probably just needed anti-depressants, not widely used back then!). I don’t know if he ever looked at it beyond that first day, but some of the nuggets of wisdom I found I remember and trot out when I need them still.
In the words of Marlene Dietrich: “I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.”
In honor of that, each Wednesday I will share a quote – sometimes serious, sometimes not – that has spoken to me in the hopes it can do the same for you…
The past few weeks – no, make that months – have been particularly hectic at our house, so here’s one that I resemble a little too closely 😉
Might we not say to the confused voices which sometimes arise from the depth of our being: “Ladies, be so kind as to speak only four at a time?”
~ Madame Swetchine
Like you, I, too, love quotes.
And use them in little handmade books or cards or on my blog.
Great photo to accompany your lovely words about words.
Used bookstores are one of my favorite places!
